How to Perform Toilet Repair
If you are experiencing problems with your toilet, you should call a plumber or toilet repair professional. The professionals will diagnose the problem and then fix it. In some cases, they will replace the flapper and wax seal. In other cases, they may have to replace the whole toilet unit. These professionals will have the proper tools and equipment to perform the repair.
Replace the flange
The first step to replace the flange on a toilet is to measure the size of the outflow pipe mouth. After you measure the mouth, you should place the old flange in a plastic bag. Then, take the new flange and fit it over the outflow pipe, making sure that there are no gaps below it. Screw in new bolts and nuts to secure the new flange.
Next, you will need a repair plate. This plate should be slightly larger than the old flange, and it will slide over it. Once it slides over the broken flange, you can install the ring. Be sure to align the ring with the track of the flange. Then, replace the screws that hold the flange to the floor with the new screws.
Replace the flapper
If your toilet flapper isn’t making a good seal, it’s time to replace it. Over time, flappers can harden and warp, and they can’t make a seal anymore. If the flapper is warped, the water may not stay in the bowl, and the toilet will be constantly running. To test if the flapper is faulty, add a drop of food coloring to the toilet bowl, but do not flush the colored water. If this does not work, call a plumber to repair it.
If your toilet is running, the most likely cause is a broken flapper. The flapper valve is a semicircular sheet of rubber that sits over the hole in the toilet tank. It connects to tiny pegs on either side of the overflow valve, as well as to a chain that hangs from the lever on the toilet handle. To replace the flapper, remove it from its mounting pegs.
Replace the seat
To replace the seat, you need to remove the bolts holding it in place. Usually, there are two bolts to a toilet seat. You can use a screwdriver or a pliers to turn the nuts in the seat. If you don’t know how to remove these bolts, you can also use penetrating oil to help loosen them.
Before you begin the process, you need to make sure that the bolts are secure and you are not risking anything by loosening them. If you don’t want to loosen the bolts, you can use a screwdriver or a small screwdriver to tighten them. The seat should now fit snugly into the toilet bowl. You should also check to make sure that the bolts are not broken.
Replace the lid
If your toilet lid has a loose bolt, you can easily replace it. You should first remove the old handle from the toilet. Then, locate the retaining nut inside the toilet tank. You can turn it to the left to loosen it. Next, slide the new handle onto the nut. Once you have the new handle in place, you can tighten the retaining nut to secure it.
Then, you will need to remove the old seat and lid. This is relatively easy to do, but you need to remove the seat first, since it is connected to the toilet pan through a hinge. Some lids have hidden fixings, while others use a barrel hinge, which requires removing the entire toilet seat. In order to install a new lid, you will need a screwdriver, as well as a wrench.
Replace the fill valve
To replace the fill valve in a toilet, follow the instructions provided with your replacement kit. You will need an adjustable wrench to remove the fill valve locknut and the top supply slip nut. Once you’ve removed them, unclip the refill tube from the overflow tube. Next, remove the old fill valve and replace it with a new float-cup fill valve. You can purchase one from a hardware store. Be sure to clean the inside of the tank well before installing the new fill valve gasket.
Before replacing the fill valve, you should turn off the water supply to the toilet. You may need to open the tank. Make sure that you are standing over the tank and not on the toilet’s side. Then, remove the old fill valve from the toilet’s tank. This will release excess water that may have collected during flushing. Once you’re done, the tank will have an open hole in the bottom.
